Tour de Taiwan (#7)

After a long, hot, and hilly day yesterday, today's route was filled with gradual undulating hills that border the Pacific Ocean.

The weather was much milder with a strong southerly wind which challenged all of us to work a little harder and seek shelter by drafting each other.

We stopped frequently to catch our breath including a stop at a local crafts center which celebrated our coming with multiple fireworks. King Liu stopped at this same center last year and was also graciously welcomed. We all shared local ice cream and cold drinks.

Our journey continued along the coast line to a small European enclave tucked away on the beach. For the first time, we enjoyed lots of Pasta and Risotto overlooking the ferocious Pacific Ocean. It was great view and gave us all an understanding of the power of the sea.

Departing the ocean hideaway, we stopped along the way at a historic park which was filled with unique wooden structures constructed with tree branches. They provided the frame for a magnificent 220 degree ocean view.

From here, we bicycled to a famous Taiwan gorge which was filled with natural limestone. It was a magnificent sight. We enjoyed Chinese pastries as we enjoyed the natural beauty.

Blistering rain and strong winds challenged us for the final 25 kilometers of today's stage. We all stayed close together, and finished up in Cheng Gong cultural center overlooking the ocean. It is the home of one of the engineering wonders of Taiwan. A perfectly symmetrical 100 meter, 8 hill foot bridge which leads to the small Three Immortal Rock island.

We all settled into the hotel to rest up for our trip from Cheng Gong to the famous town of Hualin. It will be a 100k+ tour tomorrow. We're hoping the weather improves even though there is talk of a typhoon.

More to follow.
