Blue Ocean, Blue Sky, Eluanbi Lighthouse
The original schedule for the fifth day of the tour was to pedal from Dapeng Bay in Donggang Township to Fong Harbor, a 44-kilometer ride. The next day, the riders planned to turn onto Provincial Highway No. 9 and start the first uphill challenge ride of the 11-day tour. However, the A-Team riders felt strong, and they agreed to add a few extra kilometers southward to Eluanbi Lighthouse at the last minute.
In order to help all the riders relax and catch up, it was originally arranged that they would have an easy 44-kilometer ride on the morning of the fifth day, then a nice spa at their hotel in the afternoon, the easiest schedule since the start of the tour.
However, upon arrival at today's finishing point, everyone felt cool and comfortable riding together under the cloudy skies, and all enjoyed the great scenery in Pingtung. A last minute decision was made to add 30 extra kilometers southward to Eluanbi Lighthouse. This new addition helped signal the breakthrough of the 500-kilometer mark. Chairman Tony Lo said that extending the ride to the southernmost tip of Taiwan would make the round-island trip more meaningful. In addition, he said, after the group’s four-day harmonizing riding, the pace of the team was more in sync, and nobody was showing any problems with energy and speed. Therefore, he suggested an overall 1000-kilometer ride around the island by adding a few extra kilometers to the originally calculated 920 kilometers distance. The proposal was favorably supported by the other team riders.
Along Ping-Er Road, sea-watching while riding helped the riders pass the time until they arrived at Eluanbi Lighthouse. It was a spectacular area where the riders all spent time taking photos. Every rider was in good spirits. Blue ocean, blue sky, white clouds, a classic Lighthouse and great photo opportunities made for a worthwhile ride.
In general, after the five days of the ride so far, the energy and the consensus of the team were obviously improved, and they were riding more comfortably together. In addition to learning from each other, they also received expert instruction. Bob Margevicius Vice President of Specialized, who used to be a cyclist, also instructed A-Team members how to ride more accurately. Margevicius said that although A-Team members were not professional cyclists; they surprisingly made a lot of improvements in just a few days. He was also surprised that Velo President Stella Yu, who was the slowest rider in the beginning, could ride together with the group now. It was quite good for her. Stella responded that A-Team partners were working hard to learn cycling and making quick improvements. It was also important that the A-Team companies continually strive and improve.
